How do vortex cannons work
Water going down the drain and the air in a tornado form vortices in the shape of funnels. The air cannon vortex is a donut shape or, mathematically, a torus. The air in the donut rolls from the centre to the edge. The air forms this shape because the air leaving the cup at the centre of the hole is traveling faster than the air leaving around the edge of the hole. The air keeps its shape since the surrounding air is relatively slow moving and under higher pressure.
This is a recommended post-visit activity for a field trip to Science World. It is related to the Air Cannon exhibit in Eureka! Describe the characteristics of air.
Gender reveal party ideas include handing out props, playing fun games, taking votes on the gender and baking delicious treats with the gender reveal baked right inside. They are simple canisters that feature a wick that, when lit, reach inside of the canister and cause a steady stream of brightly colored smoke to appear. Every Gender Reveal Smoke Cannon is made with compressed air cannons and filed with bright blue rice powder making them simple to use and safe for the environment. These are absolutely perfect for a color toss photo shoot!
Safely shower the new parents in bight pink or blue powder. Clean up outdoors is easily achieved with a vacuum, rake, or even a leaf blower. Our confetti is biodegradable, and made using non-toxic dyes. If disposing, please recycle.
Vacuuming is probably the best way to clean up confetti and glitter, but there are some fine points to make about the process. Our pink confetti gender reveal poppers are easy to use, and they shoot biodegradable confetti up to feet in the air.
A cloud of pink tissue paper fills the air when they are popped. The inch canisters are easy to use. The confetti cannons are spring loaded and have no combustible materials.

When the membrane thrusts a burst of air out of the hole, it displaces the surrounding air out side. The surrounding air swirls around in the shape of a twisting doughnut. The twisting doughnut will carry the original burst of air as far as 50 feet away. The physics of moving air is called fluid dynamics. It may seem strange to call air a fluid but motion of gases and liquids are very similar.
When a fluid twists or swirls, we call vortex. Again, note the advantage of using the fancy word vortex over the word swirl.
Swirl is used when talking about the physics of ice cream. Can you think of where you might observe a vortex at home? Look in the Bath tub, sink or toilet. Now, our cannon generates very special vortices that differ from those found in the bathroom.
